    Requirements for the BA in Sociology

    Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the Departmental Faculty Advisor and your Student Success advisor. Learn more and track your progress in the Detailed Degree Requirements and Sociology Requirements Worksheets below.

    Introductory courses:

    • LSOC 2001 Sociological Imagination (3–4 credits)
    • 1 LSOC Approved Classical Sociological Theory course* (3–4 credits)
    • 1 LSOC Contemporary Theory course* (3–4 credits)

    Other required courses:

    • 1 LSOC Sociological Methods course (3–4 credits)
    • 3 LSOC Electives, 2000 to 3000 level (9–12 credits)
    • 4 LSOC electives, 3000 level or higher* (12–16 credits)

    Senior Capstone:

    • Choose 1 of the following in consultation with your departmental faculty advisor (3–4 credits):
      • GSOC 5xxx graduate-level Sociology course
      • LSOC 4990 Independent Thesis

    Total Credits: 36-48

    *BA/MA students should take GSOC courses. All students should select graduate-level courses in consultation with the departmental faculty advisor.
