Quick Facts About Federal Grants
There are
four types of grants offered by the federal government:
- Pell Grant—awarded to undergraduate students
with exceptional financial need.
- Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
(SEOG)—awarded in addition to the Pell Grant to undergraduate students with
exceptional financial need.
- Teacher Education Assistance for College and
Higher Education (TEACH)—awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who
plan to teach in a high-need field at the elementary or secondary school
level. Recipients must agree to serve a minimum of
four years as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a school that serves
low-income students.
- Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant—awarded to
students whose parent or guardian was a member of the U.S. armed forces and
died as a result of performing military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after
the events of 9/11.
Special Circumstance Appeal for FAFSA Filers
Students who have experienced changes in financial circumstances in the last two years (since the time period the FAFSA considered) can request an adjustment to the FAFSA, which may qualify them for additional grant funds.
The following situations are considered for these appeals:
- Recent loss of employment or financial assets
- Unusual medical or dental expenses not covered by insurance
- Reduction in income
Financial documentation will be requested along with the form submission. Students can expect a response in three to four weeks and, on the basis of the documentation submitted, will be notified by email of any additional aid eligibility.
