- How are our perceptions of time and space affected by the constantly shifting movement of natural light within interior space?
- What role do architectural materials and finishes play in forming these perceptions?
- How can new lighting technologies expand historical applications of artificial light?
- What can new scientific research tell us about the impact on our health as we move through and inhabit highly changeable and interactive spaces?
On Wednesday, November 12, 2014, Parsons The New School for Design and Philips, the global leader in lighting, present Luminous Talks 3: The Changing Room, a symposium that addresses thought- provoking topics of importance to professionals who work in design disciplines including architecture and design, scientists and scholars who are making advances in the field, and the members of the public who wish to be enlightened. The symposium will be held on The New School campus and can be viewed simultaneously online via Livestream. The Changing Room, which is the third installment in the Luminous Talks series programmed by Parsons and sponsored by Philips, is AIA CES approved.
“The intention of this year’s Luminous Talks, titled The Changing Room” says Derek Porter, IALD, IES, associate profession and director of the Master of Fine Arts Lighting Design Program in the School of Constructed Environments (SCE) at Parsons The New School for Design, “is to explore the dynamic potential of environments in which both natural and artificial forms of light activate interior spaces. To that end, we have assembled a distinguished panel of design professionals and scholars who will offer an illuminating exchange of ideas and perspectives stemming from their different areas of expertise.”
Panelists include architect David Lewis, AIA, founding principal at LTL Architects and Parsons associate professor, who also serves as moderator; cultural historian Jeffrey Schnapp, professor of Romance Languages & Literature, teaching faculty member of Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, and the faculty director of metaLAB; and architect Adam Yarinsky, FAIA, LEEP AP, principal at Architectural Research Office (ARO); and Kevin Dowling, PhD, a distinguished figure in the LED lighting industry, who recently served as vice president for Philips Color Kinetics where he was responsible for identifying and developing emerging application and markets for LEDs.
The event culminates in a reception held in a space that features an immersive light installation, designed and constructed by the students in the Parsons MFA Lighting Design Program. Philips equipment used in the making of the installation will be donated to the SCE’s Light + Energy Lab, which is a resource for lighting design, architecture, interior design, and product design students.
Note: Headshots, bios, high res images, and interviews with Derek Porter and The Changing Room panelists can be arranged upon request.
