The Parsons Festival (May 7-23) will showcase student work |
April 5, 2011—The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, announces additional spring art and design public programming. Showcasing the creativity and talent across Parsons is the first ever Parsons Festival (May 7-23), a series of exhibitions, screenings, thought-provoking public programs, interactive installations, and runway shows culminating in a daylong community block party.
The festival will feature several exhibitions of work by graduating students from across Parsons, including MFA Design + Technology (May 9-23), MFA Fine Arts (May 9-23), BFA Illustration (May 9-23), and more. Scientists, scholars, and technology experts will come together for Transhumanism Meets Design (May 14-15), a symposium on technology's potential to radically transform the human condition. The festival culminates with the Parsons Block Party (May 21), which will feature a print jam, an interactive fashion photo booth, and musical performances.
Other spring highlights include a conversation with the founders of the Handspring Puppet Company, Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler (April 13), on the occasion of the Lincoln Center production of their acclaimed performance piece, Warhorse. The School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons will explore the design influence of classic fims with two screening series: Silent Clowns and Fashion in Film: Musicals. Fashion and film personalities like Simon Doonan (April 5), Tim Gunn (April 19) and Matt Zoller Seitz (May 3) will introduce the films Funny Face, Smashing Time, and Zelig, respectively, and discuss their contemporary legacies. The School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons continues its visiting artist lecture series with appearances by Cristobal Lehyt (April 6), Ann Hamilton (April 20), and Anton Vidokle (April 27).
