Supplemental Materials
Official Transcripts
Mannes requires applicants to submit official transcripts to certify their previous educational background. To complete the Mannes application, the applicant must contact the secondary schools (high schools) or colleges s/he has attended and have the official transcripts sent to the Office of Admission. Transcripts must be received by Mannes in a sealed and signed envelope.
Transfer Students and Credits
Mannes defines a Transfer Student as any student who has previously matriculated at another college or university. Transfer applicants who have completed fewer than 24 college credits must submit both high school and college transcripts. Credits for music courses taken elsewhere are not automatically transferred, though credit may be given toward a Mannes degree pending results of entrance test, interview, and transcript evaluation.
Graduate Applicants
Students who apply to graduate programs should send only college transcripts. Applicants for the Master of Music degree must have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent upon enrollment. Professional Studies Diploma applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree or conservatory diploma; however, a master’s degree is recommended.
Letters of Recommendation
All applicants must submit two letters of reference. The first letter should be written by a recent music teacher or professional musician and should focus on the applicant's talent and performance ability. The second letter should be written by a teacher or guidance counselor who is familiar with the applicant's academic aptitude.
Official TOEFL Score
Mannes defines “first language” as the language of the country in which a student has completed his or her primary (elementary) school education, or at least two years of secondary (high school) education. For applicants whose first language is other than English, an official TOEFL score must be sent from Educational Testing Service (ETS).
TOEFL scores must be no more than two years old. Scores more than two years old will only be accepted if the applicant has been studying in a college or university in the United States since the test was taken. Applicants must submit a letter of request in order to receive this exemption.
To locate a TOEFL testing center, visit www.toefl.org or call (in the United States) 1.800.go.toefl. Please allow 10 to 12 weeks for the official test scores to arrive at Mannes. Schedule your test dates accordingly. The New School/Mannes code is 2398.
The postmark deadline for official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and TOEFL scores is February 1, 2010. Photocopies and faxes are not accepted. To ensure that your supplemental materials are received by the Office of Admission, we strongly recommend that applicants send these materials via certified mail or another traceable mail service. Please do not send any unsolicited materials such as headshots, reviews, concert programs, etc.
