LEARN FROM FINANCIAL EXPERTS IN AN APPLICATION-ORIENTED PROGRAM
CENTERED ON A FULLY EQUIPPED TRADING LAB
Accepting applications now for spring and fall 2008*
The 30-credit program is a combination of core courses, electives, and internships. By careful choice of electives, students can specialize in one of these areas:
TOOLS AND INFORMATION RESOURCES The New School program offers state-of-the-art information resources and quantitative tools and techniques needed by the 21st-century international financial professional. The program is practical, fusing traditional mathematical course work with real-world applications. Our trading lab is equipped with Bloomberg and Reuters terminals and cutting-edge statistical software, and realistic trading scenarios provide an optimal learning environment to gain practical experience. The trading room’s videoconference facilities provide a 24-hour link with global markets and permit daily interactions with international academics and professionals.
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS AND ENGINEERING Financial engineering is where all the issues of global finance come together. The pricing of various derivative products and construction and reverse engineering of complicated structured products are the main topics, which are taught through intensive case studies. Group work is a central focus as students learn how to price structured and derivative products using spreadsheet pricing tools. Practical examples are introduced to illustrate risk and scenario analysis.
ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL DERIVATIVES By establishing new methods to understand, measure, and manage risk, financial derivatives have transformed finance. However, the accounting treatment of derivatives is underemphasized in many university programs. The New School program gives you the opportunity to explore this subject with experienced market professionals who can balance mathematical understanding with real-world context.
BACK OFFICE AND RISK MANAGEMENT Risk management methodologies are increasingly sophisticated. While not designed as a stand-alone risk management program, this area of study gives an overview of current techniques used in back-office risk management. Learn about the various risks faced by financial institutions, (market risks, credit risks, operational risks, and liquidity risks), the ways they can be managed, and the importance of adequate risk management systems. Emphasis is on available software.
REGULATORY PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES Regulations and compliance are at the center of today’s market practices, but academic approaches allocate relatively little attention to this subject. We offer a path of study devoted to major regulatory and compliance issues involving financial derivatives and structured products. All major markets are covered in detail, and relevant regulatory issues are introduced in context. Your knowledge of instruments and markets is enhanced through comprehensive evaluation of regulatory case studies.
Applications are now being accepted.
