Students matriculated in The New School Bachelor's Program can earn non-liberal arts credit for internships arranged through the Bachelor's Program office. To be eligible, a student must have completed at least 12 credits in residence at The New School and be in good academic standing. A student can take two internships as part of his or her program of study in the Bachelor's Program. Internships are set up as courses, normally carrying 3 credits and completed in an academic term. The student must work a minimum of 12-15 hours per week for a semester to earn the 3 credits.
Application Process
Any student interested in earning credits for an internship should discuss this option with a faculty advisor and then meet with Chrissy Roden, Assistant Director of Academic Student Services, to discuss how the internship will contribute to his or her program of study and professional goals. If the idea is approved, the student must provide documentation about the organization hosting the internship, along with a brief job description. If the internship meets the requirements, the student will be given the Contract for Internship form to be completed by the student and the organization.
The contract must be returned, along with a thorough description of the intern's responsibilities provided by the organization or the on-site supervisor and specifying
- the number of hours the intern is expected to work
- the period of time covered by the internship
- the name, title, and mailing address of the on-site supervisor.
The job description and the completed contract form must be submitted for approval to Chrissy Roden, accompanied by the student's written explanation of the value of the internship and how it fits into the student's course of study at The New School. These steps must be completed before or during the registration period of the academic term for which the internship is proposed.
With Chrissy Roden's approval and the completed paperwork, the student may register for the internship credits. Tuition for internships is charged per credit, the same as other courses in the Bachelor's Program.
Internships are subject to the same add/drop deadlines as regular courses.
Evaluation
Upon completion of an internship, the student must submit a written report (4-7 pages) to Chrissy Roden describing the internship experience, and the on-site supervisor must complete a brief evaluation form provided by The New School and return it separately to Chrissy Roden. With both the report and evaluation in hand, Chrissy Roden will assign a grade of "P" (Pass) or "U" (Unsatisfactory; no credit is awarded).
