Application Instructions
- Read all instructions carefully. These will help you navigate and complete the online application. You may also download complete instructions (pdf).
- Please use the Materials Cover Sheet (pdf) whenever you send documents by mail. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application or supporting materials. The Materials Cover Sheet can be downloaded from the Supplemental Forms section of the online application. Please read and follow the instructions for submission at the top of the Materials Cover Sheet.
Deadlines
Students applying for the fall semester (September) should submit their applications by January 15. Applicants for spring (January) semester admission should apply by November 1. Live auditions are held in February and March. If you would like to schedule a live audition for the citywide audition week in March, you must submit your application by December 15.
Requirements
- Completed Application form.
- Nonrefundable application fee of $75 (credit card or check).
- Three written essays.
- Live audition, audition tape/CD, or electronic audition recording through Ekomi.
- Pre-screen tape/CD (drum, guitar, vocal applicants only; see Auditions section below).
- Official high school/secondary school transcript or school records. Transfer students must include an official high school transcript along with official college transcripts from each school attended. Please send original documents.
- SAT or ACT scores.
International Applicants Only
- All applicants with international transcripts are required to submit an original transcript along with a certified English language translation. Applicants who would like to transfer academic credits earned at non-U.S. institutions are also required to have their transcript(s) evaluated by World Education Services, our preferred provider, or another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES). A Course-by-Course Evaluation Report must be prepared for each transcript. We recommend that you start the evaluation process as early as possible and submit all required documents to WES (or another provider) to ensure the timely completion of your evaluation report. Request that your report be sent to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, University Admission, 79 Fifth Avenue, 5th floor, New York, NY 10003. (If you apply online, search for “New School Jazz” when requesting our institution.) If another provider is unable to send the report directly to the school, please collect and send the evaluation report along with a Materials Cover Sheet.
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score must be submitted by international applicants whose first language is not English. A TOEFL score of at least 600 (250 on the computer test; 100 on the Internet-based test) is preferred for admission.
Auditions
- A performance audition is required of all students applying to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
- A pre-screening CD is required for all applicants for drums, guitar, and voice. The CD must be received within one week of submitting the online application.

Essays
Essay Question #1: Lang College Essay
What does a liberal arts education mean to you and why do you want to pursue your degree at an urban school like Eugene Lang College? (Maximum 500 words)
Essay Question #2: New Populace
You have been elected the leader of a new populace. The future is in your hands. Outline a platform addressing environmental issues, education, and race and ethnicity. Be wise and be creative. (Maximum 500 words)
Essay Question #3: Jazz Artist Today
What does it mean to you to be a jazz artist in the contemporary world? Please describe how this BA/BFA Dual Degree Program with Jazz/Lang will help you realize your goals.
