The New School maintains many agreements with exchange partner institutions around the world. Through these agreements, New School students are able to study abroad while maintaining student status and financial aid as New School students. Exchange opportunities are dependent on a student’s major. Students must also be selected for one of the limited number of exchange spaces available with the program partner. Also referred to as direct application and third-party programs, these are opportunities for students to apply directly to an international host institution or university as a visiting student or to study abroad through a third-party program provider, with which The New School is affiliated. Although students apply directly for admission to the external program, all students must first apply in GoAbroad and be approved in order to proceed.

Students participating in external programs pay tuition and program fees directly to the third-party provider or host institution and do not receive New School institutional aid, but may receive federal aid. Students also receive a New School bill for mandatory University Services and Student Senate fees for all New School students as well as other fees such as the International Student Fee and the Health Fee, if they are enrolled in the university's Student Health Insurance Plan. The New School has affiliations with a number of third-party study abroad program providers that students can consider for their study abroad in consultation with their advisor. The New School has a variety of institutional study abroad programs that students may consider. Students who engage in these internal programs are able to maintain most institutional aid and scholarships during their study abroad. Democracy and Diversity Institute
The Democracy and Diversity Institute, organized annually each summer by the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies in Warsaw, Poland, is widely admired as an intimate international forum for lively but rigorous debate on critical issues of democratic life, offering an interdisciplinary, comparative, and highly interactive approach to the social, political, and cultural challenges facing today’s world. The program includes specialized coursework with a changing global theme each year and is complemented by several study tours of Warsaw’s political, cultural and historical landmarks as well as evening events featuring major intellectuals and artists from the region. To apply, all students must be at the graduate level or in their junior or senior year of an undergraduate program.

International Field Program
The International Field Program (IFP) is open to graduate and upper-level undergraduate students throughout The New School. The IFP's six-credit, two-month-long summer programs focus on international affairs-related research, seminars, and work with local organizations. New School credit is awarded for these courses, which may count toward degree requirements.

Throughout the school year and during academic breaks, New School faculty and staff manage a variety of international excursions throughout the world. Alternatively, there may be student activities such as international conferences, travel programs, or performances that students may have the opportunity to pursue. Generally lasting a few days to two weeks, international excursions are offered as a supplement to a student’s coursework, research, and extracurricular activities.

International excursions are coordinated by individual academic departments, offices, faculty, and staff. Students who are approved to participate in international excursions through The New School must register their travel with the Study Abroad office. Students are encouraged to consider international internships, volunteer programs, and professional global experiences as part of their study abroad goals. These opportunities may be integrated into a study abroad program or a supplement to a study abroad program. The New School has affiliations with a variety of study abroad organizations that may offer these opportunities. Students who are interested in these types of programs should talk with their study abroad advisor about their credit options. New School students who engage in an international internship, volunteer program, or professional global experience related to their academic program and wish to include the experience on their academic transcripts may also be eligible to register with the Office of Career Services for New School course credit. Parsons Paris Semester Study
Parsons Paris is The New School’s European campus located in the heart of Paris, France. Students with select majors at Parsons School of Design in New York have the opportunity to pursue a semester-long study abroad program at the Paris campus during the fall and spring semesters. Students in certain academic programs may be eligible to study at Parsons Paris for up to two semesters.

Students who are studying abroad at Parsons Paris will enroll in New School courses and receive credit from the university. Tuition is paid to The New School, and students maintain most institutional aid and scholarships during the program. Students should note that this program is very competitive and a limited number of spaces are available.

Parsons School of Design students who are interested in spending a semester abroad at Parsons Paris should log in to GoAbroad to see program details and submit an application.

Parsons Paris Summer Intensive
The Parsons Paris Summer Intensive Program is for college and adult applicants in all areas of study who have completed at least one year of college or are 19 years of age or older by the first day of class. Many college and adult-level students enroll in the program to acquire the skills they need to reach academic and professional goals, or to complement their full-time degree programs. Others enroll to build a competitive portfolio for graduate program applications and prepare for advanced study.

Summer Intensive students register for courses and housing through API Abroad, and pay tuition and fees to API. Academic credit and transcripts for this program are issued by The New School. Students who are interested in participating in the Summer Intensive should log in to GoAbroad to see program details and submit an application. Students approved for study abroad in the Parsons Paris Summer Intensive Program will also need to submit a program admissions application to API Abroad.

The creativity of New School students knows no limits. For some students, their academic work may be enhanced through approved research or field study activities abroad. Students who are approved by their academic departments to engage in international research or fieldwork should inform [email protected] and register their travel itinerary with the university.

The New School offers international faculty-led courses during summer and winter sessions, which typically provide liberal arts elective credits toward their degree. Students should speak with their academic advisor before applying for a short-term study abroad program to confirm that the coursework will apply to their degree.
