Fall Deadlines: October 1 and November 15, 2024

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply at least six to eight weeks before the proposed project or initiative date.

Application

Focus: Civic engagement, social justice, activism, on-campus project funding

Eligibility Criteria: Current full-time Lang students and groups that include at least one Lang student. Awards can cover tangible costs or material fees related to applicant projects. Mini-grants cannot be used to pay for compensation of time worked on projects, study abroad program fees, or tuition. However, they can be used to pay for guest speaker honoraria and fees. 

Amount: Individuals can apply for up to $750 in funding per semester; groups can apply for $1,500 per semester. Priority is given to students who have not previously received funding from CESJ.

Endorsement: A faculty, staff, or advisor reference is strongly recommended but not required. 

CESJ Mini-grants are small grants made to individual and groups of students to support student programming, research costs, activism, creative projects, and other work that focuses on social justice or civic engagement. 

Past awards have funded needs like production costs for an exhibition on Salvadoran migration and displacement, supplies for a senior thesis examining displacement in Puerto Rico, travel to the Afro Tech conference, and food for a student-organized conference on urban community and environmental health.

Application

Focus: Compensation to assist Lang students who are pursuing unpaid or underpaid summer internships committed to social justice values, practice, and/or scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria: Current full-time Lang students and graduating seniors. Priority will be given to applicants who have not received funding from Lang CESJ in the previous academic year, DACA students, students affected by the executive order travel ban, and applicants with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Eligible internships include part-time and full-time internships (any location) that require at least 160 hours over the course of the summer, would otherwise be unpaid, and are dedicated to a social justice mission. Applicants should have been offered internships by the time they apply.

Amount: Grants of up to $2,500 for part-time internships and $5,000 for full-time internships in a one-time stipend to cover living expenses over the duration of the internship.

Endorsement: Contact information for the internship supervisor is required, as they will be contacted during the application process.

Lang Civic Engagement and Social Justice (Lang CESJ) dedicates funding to Lang students who are pursuing summer internships committed to social justice values, practice, and/or scholarship. Selected grantees will be required to participate in a mid-summer gathering, complete a written reflection, and present their work at a fall mixer event on campus. CLA courses bring community partners into Lang classrooms. Student fellows support CLA classes while working with distinguished non-faculty professionals in a variety of fields.

Students must be nominated by faculty.

Application-based opportunity (course credit options available) for students to showcase their research and creative projects on interdisciplinary panels or through posters.

Students participate in three structured reviews for Dean’s Honor Symposium panels in the spring—February 25, March 25, and April 8 (the symposium) from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., or 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Feedback is essential to help the Dean’s Honor Symposium students create clear and engaging presentations. These reviews are an excellent opportunity to develop communication skills, build relationships, and learn to provide critical feedback. As part of this small learning community, you’ll be mentored by a faculty member and work with a small group at each session. You'll also see examples of outstanding work and projects that might inspire the work you’ll do as you progress through Lang.

The Dean's Honor Symposium is a conference held each spring at which student work is presented. Students apply each fall semester. The chosen projects are placed into broadly thematic panels that students spend the spring semester developing.

Award of up to $1,500 to support capstone work

Requirements/qualifications:

• Students must be matriculated degree students at Eugene Lang College.
• Students must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a Capstone course or Independent Senior Work.

• Students who receive the grant must complete a final reflection, submit a write-up of their work for the Lang Capstone blog, and make a short presentation about their experience to a First Year course. 

  Please note that funds are prioritized for students with academic merit and financial need. Projects might not receive partial funding. Deadlines may be edited on the basis of the availability of funds.

Award of $2,000 to support students enrolled at Lang pursuing an unpaid internship

Requirements/qualifications:

• Internship is secured (proof required: email from internship supervisor/coordinator).
• Internship is unpaid (proof required: email from internship supervisor/coordinator).
• The bulk of the internship is still to be completed (at least six weeks remaining).
• Students must be current Lang students (graduating students can apply only for the semester after graduation).
• First Year students need permission from the Student Success academic advisor.
• International students must be eligible for curricular practical training (CPT). Learn more at the ISSS's Employment page.
• Internships can be for credit or on a noncredit basis.
• Internships must be a minimum of 120 hours.
• Internships cannot be at The New School.
• Students can receive this grant only once.
• Students cannot receive an Independent Research/Creative Project Grant and a CESJ Summer Fellowship for the same internship.
• Students must submit an updated résumé or CV.
• Students must share their LinkedIn page.
• Students who receive the grant must submit a pre-experience reflection form and an Experience Learning Agreement (ELA) and complete a final reflection or write-up of their experience.

Grants in this project include Capstone and Unpaid Internship Grants. 

First Year Fellows mentor a class of incoming first-year students to help them make a smooth transition to Lang and engage with the campus community. Fellows lead seminar workshops with their assigned group of first-year students throughout the fall semester and meet weekly in a Teaching and Learning Seminar with other Fellows to develop and strengthen their teaching, mentoring, and facilitation practice. The Teaching and Learning Seminar will be taught by Professor Evan Litwack, chair of the First Year Program.

Fellows help new students make the transition to college by counseling them on good study habits, academic planning, time management skills, critical thinking abilities, seminar discussion techniques, and personal health and safety awareness. They also introduce new students to social justice theory and practice at Lang. Qualified students earn up to three credits for serving as First Year Fellows, following training in May and August and enrollment in the Teaching and Learning Seminar in the fall.

Funding is available for students majoring in Global, Urban, and Environmental Studies who are planning independent research, study abroad, or internships during the spring 2025 semester or the summer 2025 break that relate directly to their Capstone projects. These funds are earmarked for students whose projects are interdisciplinary, involving at least two of the GLUE programs. These small grants of up to $500 may be used to defray the cost of airfare/transportation, program fees, transcription costs, and other related expenses. Grants are competitive and limited in number.

If funding remains, late applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until Sunday, March 2, at 11:59 p.m. Late applications will be funded on a first-come, first-served basis until the funding pool is exhausted.

Lang Academic Fellows
Lang Academic Fellows are nominated by faculty to assist with individual courses that the students have previously taken or for which they are otherwise qualified to provide support. Fellows earn four credits. They work closely with faculty, attend the course on a regular basis, and meet frequently with students in the course to work with them on their writing, reading, and academic practices. The emphasis of the program is for Academic Fellows to help students with their broader intellectual, creative, and critical thinking. In addition, Academic Fellows meet once a week in a seminar to study the theory and practice of pedagogy. (Note: Academic Fellows must be nominated by an instructor; following the nomination, there is a short interview process with the Academic Fellows director.)

Qualified students work with a faculty mentor who is teaching an introductory-level science and/or math course to host outings and study sessions, build community among students, identify learning challenges in the course, and offer peer tutoring for students in the class. For students interested in pursuing science and math education in combination with communication, media, art, policy, and education studies, this program offers an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the challenges associated with science and math learning and current best practices in pedagogies of engagement and assessment of student learning through a weekly education seminar course.

This fellowship is typically offered in the spring term.

Focus: Engaged learning, research, theory, practice

Eligibility Criteria: Current second-year, third-year, and fourth-year BA/BFA students at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts with a strong academic record in the social sciences

Amount: Fellows receive a $2,250 stipend.

Application Components: Applicants must submit their résumé showing relevant experience, a cover letter, and a writing sample and must indicate at least two preferred internship sites. Students will be notified in the spring if they have been selected for an interview.

This fellowship provides a unique opportunity to combine research, theory, and practice. It requires the ability to work independently over the summer and throughout the fall semester. This fellowship provides a rare chance for students to develop their research and writing skills through individual mentoring and feedback on their work. The fellowship has three components:

• An internship of at least 120 hours over the fall semester, designed to connect students' academic interests to organizations in related fields 
• Work with an NSSR PhD student throughout the fellowship to develop and conduct a research project related to the fall internship
• A four-credit independent study course in the spring term, during which students work with their research mentor to complete a research paper

This 120-hour semester-long fellowship offers students interested in climate change, environmental justice, and sustainability the opportunity to work alongside staff and researchers at either the Tishman Environment and Design Center or the Urban Systems Lab.
