COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination Policies
Testing
Testing is not required for building access, but the university recommends that all community members test if they are symptomatic, after high-risk activities, and before or after travel.
Faculty and staff can obtain over-the-counter tests from CVS and other retailers. Employees can use their healthcare, FSA, or HSA funds to cover the cost. Below are additional resources to help you find low- or no-cost testing:
- COVID-19: Express Testing: Schedule an appointment at one of the Health Department's free Express Testing locations, which usually return
test results within a few hours. Testing is available regardless of immigration status.
- NYC Health + Hospitals Testing Sites: Find locations where you can get free at-home tests. You can also visit the Health + Hospitals facility for testing, regardless
of immigration status or ability to pay.
Testing Positive
The CDC recommends that you stay home when you’re sick and return to school or work once you’re feeling better and you’ve been without a fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication. Refrain from retesting after a positive test unless directed
to do so by a health professional. Positive rapid antigen test results do not require PCR confirmation.
Faculty and staff should email COVID-19 PCR or rapid antigen test results to [email protected] to use approved COVID-19 sick days.
Please note: The COVID-19 leave legislation expires on July 31, 2025.
Masks
Masks are not required but are an additional prevention strategy that you can use to further protect yourself and others from respiratory illnesses including COVID-19, flu, and RSV. Learn more about the usage of masks. The university supports anyone who wishes to wear a mask at any time, in any environment, and for any reason.
Vaccination
Effective June 2023, The New School will no longer require COVID-19 vaccination for students, faculty, and staff. The university continues to strongly recommend that all community members remain up-to-date with COVID vaccines and boosters, as recommended
by the CDC and your healthcare provider.
For more information, review the core prevention strategies recommended by the CDC.
Employees Caring for Family Members
Employees who regularly care for a family member who is at higher risk for severe complications from COVID-19 may be eligible for time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Staff members themselves may be covered by NYS Paid Family Leave.
Please contact [email protected] for all leave inquiries.
